background: association between the vitamin d deficiency and metabolic syndrome (mets) has previously been noted and reported to be controversial. the aim of this study was to determine the association of serum 25 (oh) d level and vitamin d dietary intake with mets among iranian population . methods: this analytical study was conducted on 122 patients with mets based on the atpiii criteria and 128 subjects without mets as control from september 2010 to april 2011 . serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and 25(oh) d were compared between the two groups. a food frequency questionnaire (ffq) was used to calculate dietary intake. data were analyzed using chi- square test, t -test, mann-whitney u test and l ogistic regression analysis. results: serum concentrations of 25 (oh) d, calcium and phosphorus and calcium intake were significantly lower in subjects with mets compared to the subjects without mets . 98.4% of subjects with mets and 88.3% without mets had vit. d deficiency and this difference was statistically significant ( p =0.005). in regression analysis, lower concentration of serum 25 (oh) d, calcium and phosphorus and lower calcium and diary intake were predictors of mets . conclusions: serum 25 (oh) d level, calcium and phosphorus and calcium intake are associated with metabolic syndrome . however, the mechanism of this association requires further studies.

Association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels and vitamin D dietary intake with metabolic syndrome: a case control study.

BACKGROUND Association between the vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has previously been noted and reported to be controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the association of serum 25 (OH) D Level and Vitamin D dietary intake with MetS among Iranian population. METHODS This analytical study was conducted on 122 patients with MetS based on the ATPIII criteria and 1...

Low Serum Levels of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D in Association with Type 2 Diabetes in Indian Patients

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency is a common disorder worldwide and is indicated by low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Recent studies have suggested an association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency with diabetes mellitus. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and type 2 diabetes in South Indian patients. Materials and Methods...

The Relationship between Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D Levels and Metabolic Syndrome in Birjand Children, East of Iran

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is an important risk factor that is associated with vitamin D deficiency, according to recent studies. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and risk of metabolic syndrome in children in Birjand. Materials and Methods: A case-control study on 6 to 18 years old metabolic syndrome patients, this investigation was ...

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and the metabolic syndrome in older persons: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND Recent evidence indicates that a lower plasma level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 OHD) is associated with a higher risk of the metabolic syndrome. It has not been studied in older people with a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency. OBJECTIVE This study investigates the association between vitamin D status and the metabolic syndrome in community-dwelling older persons in the Neth...

Association between serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and community-acquired pneumonia: a case-control study

Background Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common disease with significant morbidity and mortality. There is evidence that vitamin D deficiency can be associated with infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of vitamin D between patients with CAP and healthy controls. Methods In a case-control study on 73 patients with CAP and 76 healthy controls, the serum...

Vitamin D Receptor Poly(A) Microsatellite Polymorphism and 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Serum Levels: Association with Susceptibility to Breast Cancer

PURPOSE According to previous studies, vitamin D exhibits protective effects against breast cancer via the vitamin D receptor (VDR). There is growing evidence that breast cancer incidence is associated with various polymorphisms of the VDR gene. This study investigates the association of VDR poly(A) microsatellite variants with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) serum levels and breast cancer risk. ...
